Conroe, TX (August 20, 2022) - History has been made in the Gulf Coast Wing Cadet Program. For the first time in at least a dozen years, perhaps in the history of the Gulf Coast Wing, Cadets are getting qualified to fly as aircrew on B-17 Texas Raiders. On August 19, 2022, Cadets JT Mounce and Robert Buniva attended Load Master School at the Wing.

On November 12, 2022, two World War II-era aircraft, a B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra, collided mid-air and crashed during the Wings Over Dallas airshow at Dallas Executive Airport in Dallas, Texas, United States. The collision occurred at 1:22 p.m. local time (CST, UTC−6).The airshow, which coincided with Veterans Day commemorations, was organized by the Commemorative Air.

Ragan served as the radioman on Texas Raiders "when it was. a PB-1W in the US Navy," the CAF Gulf Coast Wing's B-17 Texas Raiders Facebook page explained. He rejoined the B-17's crew in 2019 with the CAF. Root was a retired airline pilot and training officer for the Gulf Coast Wing of the CAF.

The B-17 Texas Raiders joined the group in 1973, before one-wheeled touchdowns were nixed from the show. It was donated by the company Aeroservice, still in a cargo configuration. Its major restoration to return to its World War II look occurred between 1983 and 1986 under the leadership of Pat Elliott, aka "Col. Cool."
